All these concepts have been beautifully drafted in Yoga Shashtra so as to order and maintain physical and mental state in an optimum way. It is not false to say –Yoga requires mental equilibrium.

The word Yoga is actually ‘Yog’. Yog in Sanskrit literally means incidence or coordination in a very unique way. You did not expect your beloved one to be there and if you suddenly find him/her –that’s Yog too! Nevertheless, the word ‘Yoga’ as known today refers to ‘Yogasanas’ (aasana means posture) that means the Yog Postures, the postures performed in coordination of body, mind and soul in a very special way. What we spell ‘Ltd’ for limited, ‘Yoga’ is basically ‘Yogasana’ or ‘Yogasan’. Yog is just beyond sitting in a physical posture –typical Yog would include meditation, pranayama (holistic breathing technique), humming and other divine acts.

The exact origin of Yog is unknown. It has been practiced since time immemorial as Hindu Gods and Goddesses have been described to practice Yoga. Lord Shiva (who has No aadi & anta –neither birth nor death) is known for his Samadhi Yogasan meaning the Posture of Salvation.

What Yoga or Yog known to the mankind is an effort by Sage Patanjali (about 150 BC) who wrote down traditional text on Yog and Yog Sutras. The scripture is known as Patanjali Yog Shashtra and is considered as the first authoritative text/scripture or book of Yogasanas.

Today, Yogasanas have been practiced worldwide and more and more people now opt for this holistic exercise learning its endless health benefits that not only restore the body systems but also strengthen the mind and leave the practitioner with serene soul.

The beauty of practicing yogasanas is most of the yoga postures are innocent and do not produce any harmful or side effects. On the contrary to popular belief, Yogasanas DO have contraindications and for this reason, it is always better to contact veteran yoga guru before getting into the whole course of Yog or Yogasanas.
