What do Ayurvedic Scholars Think about Uterine Fibroid -Much Hyped Problem?

Ayurvedic treatment for uterine fibroids is considered to be one of the safest and steady ways of eliminating the women’s anatomical problem in modern times. For the uninitiated, it may be better to first learn the meaning of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is science or a time-tested traditional system of medicine that originated in India. Etymologically, this term stems from Sanskrit words ‘Ayur’ (Ayus) implying life or longevity and ‘Veda’ meaning ‘knowledge. Therefore, Ayurveda refers to knowledge of human life or long life and is often considered as the fifth Veda (the four others being Atharvaveda, Rugveda, Yajurveda and Saamveda).
This Indian system of medicine presents an all-inclusive approach for the treatment and prevention of various diseases and ailments through lifestyle interventions and natural herbs.

What are uterine fibroids?
How can you define uterine fibroids? The uterine fibroids are also known as leiomyomas or myomas. They are normally benign growths of the muscle inside the uterus of women. These fibroids vary in size, position and number and cause uterine enlargement. Fibroids are of two types. Some can be dealt with medication while others are malignant and necessitate surgery. The symptoms of uterine fibroids include experiencing excessive abdominal pressure and frequent urination, lower back pain and enlargement of the uterus. Women in their reproductive years are usually affected by this common aliment.

In Ayurveda, the fibroid development is considered to be ‘mamsadhatu’ of women’s uterus. In simple words, it means abnormal growth in muscles and the connective tissues of the uterus. This abnormal growth generates excessive bleeding and it is called ‘Yoni-vyapad’ or disorder in the female reproductive system.

Ayurvedic treatment
The primary treatment of fibroids is to check haemorrhaging, tone the uterus, and lower the level of estrogens. There are three important terms in Ayurveda that concern the overall wellbeing of our body including the uterus. They are ‘kapha, vata and pitta’. The uterine fibroids normally fall in the category of kapha disorder. However, it can reach the level of ‘pitta’ and vata’ problems, too. And this is believed to be the pre-cancerous condition of the woman. As a result, the treatment needs to be strong enough to combat the triple problem of kapha, vatta and pitta.

Let us now briefly learn more about these three terms from the Ayurvedic perspective. The Vata is formed by the blending of akasha or space and vayu or air. This Vata is the force that drives our body and any disproportion of it causes diseases and ailments. The Pitta problem appears by the mixture of gas, fire and water. Normally, it generates heat in our body and facilitates proper functioning of the digestive system and also tones up the brain power. However, any disorder can result in malfunctioning of the stomach and brain. The Kapha force allows our body to be stable as it transforms cells into muscles and bones. It is an amalgamation of water and Prithvi or earth.

Herbal approach
There are many herbs that can be effectively used in the treatment of uterine fibroids. They are Ashoka, Guggulu, Kumari, Neem, Manjistha and Shud. The plant extractions can be used to make decoctions and paste in the treatment of uterine fibroids. In Ayurvedic parlance, they are called churnas (powders) and asavas (syrups). An appropriate dosage as directed by an Ayurveda practitioner can facilitate complete relief from the uterine fibroids problem. This treatment can take a few days to months depending on the severity of the problem.

Some of the readily Ayurvedic herbal medicines available in the market are Ashok ghana vati, Chandraprabha and Kanchanar guggul. Massage of castor oil on the abdomen is also recommended in the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Please provide details of your condition (since when did the problems start, what is the nature of the swellings on your kidney, what medications have been taken so far). and we can surely suggest you some Ayurvedic supplements that can help.
As of now, avoiding foods that are pungent, salty and sour in taste, drinking plenty of fluids (water, soups, broths) etc will help in bringing down the inflammation.
