Raging testosterone-A photo feature on Tulsi Akhada of Benares

Who would think that there is a thriving culture of personal fitness in the narrow network of streets running parallel to the Ganga? The former ‘gymnasiums’ of Benares, the ‘Kushti Akhada’ (wrestling rinks) are not a common sight but definitely not on the path of fading away. The sport has found patronage in a few young boys who are guided by the few older men, for whom the passion runs deep.

The Tulsi Akhada is said to have been established by the great poet, Tulsidas himself and is said to be at least 5,000 years old. This photo blog is pleasant reminder of the history that hangs in our daily lives.

Having travelled mapless and ‘ungoogled’ in India for over 7 years, I gave up the cubicle formally about 3 years ago and I am now handling part of the business for a decade old adventure travel company called Getoffurass! Since we largely operate in the off-beat space of travel, I am lucky to get access and intimacy in terms of culture and tradition to many destinations within India. I have been published regularly with Indian and International magazines/ newspapers/ on-line space like Lonely Planet, Times of India, DNA, Hindustan Times, GPS Mycity, Romar Traveller, I-Mint, Mahindra Homestays, Karnataka State website and many more. I have also extended my work to write scripts of travel based documentaries and Audio Visuals.

Are you mentioning Tulsidas, author of RamCharitMans, if it is so, quite a surprising fact…
