Ayurveda’s Take on Diabetes

Ayurveda has been in knowledge since thousands of years and is known to treat several types of diseases in an effective and efficient manner. This traditional medical concept is gaining wide popularity in the modern market due to their no side effect causing characteristic.

Many individuals these days prefer taking ayurvedic herbs for any sort of body ailments rather than undergoing allopathic treatments. One such basic ailment amongst majority of individuals these days is – diabetes. Be it type I or type II, diabetes is a disease that almost every individual is scared of. To treat it in the most natural manner, switch to ayurveda.

Type I diabetes, also known as insulin dependent diabetes, is a chronic disease caused due to pancreatic failure. Pancreas are the glands, present inside the human body, that are responsible for generating sufficient amount of insulin which then aids in regulating the normal blood glucose levels in the body. Pancreatic failure causes imbalance in blood glucose levels by reducing the secretion of insulin. This leads to type I diabetes which is irreversible. Type II diabetes, on the other hand, is caused when the body possesses sufficient amount of insulin but still fails to absorb glucose from the blood. This type of diabetes is reversible if detected at an early stage.

Treating type I diabetes with ayurveda
According to ayurveda, toxins inside the body are usually generated both by physical as well as emotional factors and lead to illness. Unstable blood glucose levels are, therefore, an outcome of unhealthy diet and bad lifestyle. Genetic factors may also be responsible for attainment of type I diabetes. Ayurvedic treatment for type I diabetes follows a simple yet basic principle – identify the root cause of the disease and then apply natural and necessary herbs as remedies for its treatment.

Medicines prescribed under ayurvedic treatment are purely natural and lack the presence of any sort of chemical elements. According to doctors, these medicines work very well if the patient incorporates good eating and sleeping habits in his regular lifestyle. They expect that their patients should avoid sedentary lifestyle and must indulge in eating healthy food in optimum quantity. Foods like fish and yogurt must be strictly ignored. Moreover, besides undertaking these ayurvedic medicines, an individual is also required to indulge in meditation, yoga and proper body exercising too so as to reduce stress as well as enhance hormone levels and their flow inside the body. The reason behind this is that hormonal imbalance proves inviting for several serious diseases, including diabetes too.

Ayurvedic herb, called Gymnema sylvestre, is known to treat both type I and type II diabetes since thousands of years. This herb aids in destroying or reducing excess sugar levels inside the human body besides reducing the need for the hormone – insulin – too. Moreover, regular consumption of this herb also helps in reducing fasting blood glucose levels to a significant extent. This herb has numerous advantages in diabetes – it enhances the secretion of beta cells, aids in increasing HDL (good cholesterol levels etc), allows lowering of triglyceride levels and LDL (bad cholesterol levels) etc, prevents obesity, aids in curbing cravings for sugar, improves digestion.

Besides this, unripe bitter melon extracts can also prove very beneficial in curing type I diabetes. Likewise, extracts of gourd vine Momordica charantia also possess medicinal characteristics. Other herbs that possess such qualities to monitor type I diabetes include cinnamon, asphaltum or pure shilajit, black or white cumin seeds tea, turmeric, amalaki, jamun seed powder and neem etc.

Treating type II diabetes with ayurveda
Type II diabetes, being reversible, hold many pros under ayurveda. The herbs that prove very beneficial in curing this type of diabetes include regular consumption of fenugreek seeds, cinnamon bark, aloe vera, fenugreek as a vegetable, psyllium husk, jamun juice, onion, bitter gourd, garlic and extracts of Indian Kino tree etc. Ayurveda, besides providing these above mentioned herbs for curing type II diabetes, also aids in lowering its symptoms like frequent urination, excessive hunger and thirst as well as insulin resistance etc. These herbs also act as detoxifying agents and aid in removing harmful toxins from inside the body thereby making it more immune to any sort of infections too.

Working of certain methodologies for treating diabetes:

  • Indian ginseng ashwagandha is the most effective means of treating diabetes.
  • Salacia oblonga aids in lowering the blood glucose levels to a significant extent by binding the intestinal enzymes together that break down carbohydrates, which are the main source of sugar or glucose, inside the human body.
  • Amla or other such fruits containing the antioxidant vitamin C also work wonders for treating diabetes.
  • Plantain peels soaked overnight in water can be drunk three times the following day to balance high blood sugar levels.
  • Manganese allows producing optimum quantities of insulin and hence, foods rich in this nutrient such as fruits, nuts, grains and green leaves of edible plants etc must be incorporated in daily life.

Besides the numerous advantages, that ayurveda possesses, several disadvantages have also been noticed. Although ayurveda doesn’t leave any side effects yet excessive consumption of ayurvedic herbs may lead to abdominal discomfort. Hypoglycemic patients must keep a track for their herb doses as this may dangerously affect their sugar levels.

According to ayurveda, a patient diagnosed with diabetes is required to consume fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products and whole meal bread etc, on a daily basis. Cooked starchy foods, heavy meals, fried or oily foods and sugary desserts etc must be strictly avoided in order to maintain blood glucose levels besides aiding in serious recovery from diabetes too. Moreover, taking 5 – 6 small meals a day rather than 1 – 2 large meals is advisable. Taking allopathic medicines for diabetes is a lifetime process which may lead to several serious disorders or malfunctioning inside the human body. Moreover, diabetes is a chronic disease and requires incorporation of a healthy lifestyle for recovery. These ayurvedic medicines only act as supplements to diminish the harmful effects that this disease can pose for the body.
