Approaching Ayurveda–an age old science

If you have ever thought about Ayurvedic philosophy before, there are many chances that you get confused because of the holistic and divine approach of this medical science to the health ailments and the human being, what is called as miniature universe.

Let us make it quite simple and focus on the basic principles of Ayurveda that one needs to understand for applying Ayurvedic wisdom to gain longevity without any hassles. Said this, we won’t go too deeply or else it may further become perplexed. The original language and the medium of instruction for Ayurveda is Sanskrit. The text, shlokas (the holy chants) are written in Sanskrit and so is the descriptions about signs, symptoms, diagnose & treatment, prevention and the regimen.

The Five Elements –Panchamahabhuta
According to Ayurveda, the body of any living soul, especially the human is made up of five nature’s elements called panchamahaboota or panchmahabhut. Ayurvedic philosophy of creation of the life, the approach for the health ailments and its treatment is based on panchamahabhuta. The five elements –the earth, fire, water, ether and air; are the building blocks of the human body. All the body biochemical reactions and enzyme transformation happen by dint of panchamahabhuta as said by ancient sages of Ayurveda.

Every Component Has Potency
Ayurveda believes that every component that is made up of panchamahabhuta has either medicinal properties or poisonous. Said this, any substance under the sky can harm or benefit the body made up of panchamahabhoot. The nature and human is made up of the same elements and hence are inextricably associated with each other. The substances like food or natural remedy is therefore serve as medicines or poison depending upon how it is used. Let’s see some instances to make this clear…

If consumed in moderation, the dairy products are very beneficial and are vital source of energy (as they contain saturated fats and calcium) but then if they are taken in excess, they give raise to congestion, increased risks of hypercholesterolemia and cardiac disease.

Honey (madhu) contains healing substances that help in keeping the health ailments at bay when consumed properly. Being a natural sweetener, it can be used in several ways. Ayurveda describes honey as powerful digestive, heart tonic and natural respiratory immune booster when consumed in proper quantity. When heated to temperature of 40 degree or above, this naturally turns into ‘toxic’ material and if consumed, blocks the tiny vessels (srotasas) of the body.

The mango is said to have rasayana capacity (ability to rejuvenate and revitalize tissues), according to Ayurveda. Nevertheless, the raw (green) mango is not beneficial to the body as it may serve as abhishyandi (pronounced –a bee sh y andi), a quality that makes it very heavy to digest and when absorbed by intestines, it may block the micro-channels (the srotasas).

Likewise, the honey and ghee if consumed in equal quantity creates negative body changes that over the time may fatally harm the body systems and hence it is never recommended. If these both are to be consumed for medicinal purpose, they are taken in different quantity which is good for the body.

The science of Ayurvedic treatment is carried out as per the condition, digestive capability, prakriti, and the endurance of the patient. It cannot have one common drug working for everyone with same effect just like modern medicines.
